New Short Film
In a few short weeks, I’ll be directing and starring in a film I wrote. On December 9, production will begin on Unhappy in its Own Way, a short narrative film, inspired by true events about a young stage manager who longs to be an actress but spends her life caring for others and is invisible in her job and in her family. She finds out her rebellious brother has died in a motorcycle accident shortly after her father has suffered a heart attack and must decide whether or not to make the ultimate sacrifice and keep the terrible news to herself.
Famed Chinese actress, Kuei Ya-lei has already been cast as the glamorous, self-involved mother and American actor Al Brown, best known for his work on the critically acclaimed HBO series The Wire, has been cast as the long-suffering father who is facing his own mortality.
Kuei Ya-lei is one of the most celebrated actresses in Asia and has starred in over 45 feature films, two of which (The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman) were directed by Academy Award winner Ang Lee and both were nominated in the Best Foreign Film category. She has been nominated for the Golden
Horse Award six times and been awarded the statue four times. She has also been nominated for Best Supporting Female Independent Spirit Award. She is currently filming a sequel to Ang Lee’s celebrated Eat Drink Man Woman in Shanghai and Taiepei.
Al Brown is best-known for his role as Major Stanislaus Valchek on HBO’s smash hit series The Wire. He has numerous television credits including Homicide: Life on the Street, Rescue Me, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the new TNT series Men of a Certain Age (starring Ray
Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula) as well as roles in feature films including The Replacements and Red Dragon.
Bobby Webster (Cinematographer) has shot fifteen short films and other projects in the past three years, including a music video for the band Blackpool and the upcoming feature Casual Encounters. His credits as a writer-director include Bluebeard’s Wife (Best of Raindance) and the feature screenplay The Andy Macintosh Equation, one of three finalists for the 2007 Sloan Foundation feature-writing competition.
